今日の話題は: Proverbs

久しぶりにことわざを紹介したいと思います。今日は色々な場面で使いそうなことわざ:

Actions speak louder than words.

このことわざには「speak louder」は「より声大きく喋る」という意味じゃなくて、「より伝わる」という意味です。それでこのことわざを全体的に見ると意味は「行動の方は言葉の方より伝わる」。使う場面は普段、誰かがよく「やるよ。」と言っているのに結局やりません。

例文:

A: Will you please wash the dishes after dinner?
B: I will. I promise (よくこう言ってもしない)
A: Actions speak louder than words.

C: I won't be late for dinner tonight.
D: Actions speak louder than words.

E: My boyfriend said he'll never cheat on me again. (cheat = うわき)
F: Actions speak louder than words. You should dump him. (dump = 別れる)
