Bummer

今日の話題は: One-point English

 

今日はバッドニュースを聞く時に使う表現を紹介したいと思います。その表現は「bummer」です。皆さんは聞いたことがありますか?

 

「bummer」は周りの人に悲しませたりガッカリさせたりする話しです。なので「bummer」は名詞です。ネイティヴスピーカーはよく人の悪いニュースを聞く「That's a bummer.」や「What a bummer.」ニュアンスは「かわいそう」、「残念」等の労わる時に使う言葉と一緒です。

 

例文:

 

A: What's wrong?

B: ...I got fired.

A:Oh no! What a bummer!

 

 

C: I had to cancel my vacation because my dog got sick.

D: That's a bummer. Is your dog OK?

C: Yeah, he's better now.

 

 

E: How was the interview?

F: I didn't get the job...

E: That's a real bummer. But it's not the end of the world.
